Welcome to Selling Flood Insurance
Even the most prepared people can't predict the weather, which is why the best insurance agents talk to them about flood risk. Being an insurance agent is tricky though, and its intricacies present a learning curve. Whether you're expanding your offerings to selling flood insurance or are spending your first day on the job — we've compiled a few resources for early-career flood insurance agents to help make your job easier.
Check your eligibility
- If you're new to selling insurance, or considering changing professions, the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) welcomes you! First, check your eligibility to become an insurance agent.
Get Training
- Any licensed property and casualty insurance agent can sell NFIP flood insurance. In fact, the NFIP has online and in-person trainings you can take.
- Many states have special rules concerning selling flood insurance. You can check what rules your state has here https://nfipservices.floodsmart.gov/training/agent-requirements.
Be Ready to Answer Questions
- Your clients will hit the ground running with questions. You'll be a subject matter expert before you know it, but first take some time to familiarize yourself with what's covered by a flood insurance policy.
- The NFIP has a variety of brochures, infographics and other key resources available to you in our Resource Library.
- We also make key publications available for free to agents and members of the public. You can order these publications by visiting https://agents.floodsmart.gov/sites/default/files/fema_nfip-publications-order-form_04-2024.pdf.
