Help Your Clients Be Prepared for Flooding

Flood insurance is the best way for your clients to financially protect their homes, but it is not the only way. Low- to no-cost mitigation practices can help your clients be prepared for the physical damage of flooding. Even if flood insurance is not financially feasible for any of your clients, there are still measures they can take to stay prepared and protected. FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is here to help and provide resources.

As a trusted insurance agent in your community, your clients look to you for what they need to be prepared. Make sure they know about their low-cost flood insurance options and direct them to floodsmart.gov/SET to learn more about how to get S.E.T. and prepare for a flood:

  • Store Important Documents like passports and birth certificates in a flood-safe place.
  • Elevate and Anchor Utilities above potential floodwaters to ensure as little damage to homes as possible.
  • Toss out Debris from gutters and drains because flooding occurs when water cannot drain properly.

Direct your clients to floodsmart.gov/SET to learn more. After you’ve told your clients to get S.E.T., you can share these helpful resources about flood insurance:

Keep the conversation going by using the NFIP resource library to find all available resources for agents, like easy social post copy and images to engage with your community and the NFIP Publications Order Form to request free print copies of resources.

Talking Points

  1. Extreme weather is a force multiplier–causing an increase in the number of storms, floods, fires and extreme temperatures that threaten the well-being of people across our nation. Hurricane Ida is still fresh in our minds from 2022, when it devastated urban and suburban areas.

  2. Just 1 inch of water can cause roughly $25,000 of damage to your home.

  3. 98% of all counties have experienced a flood event, but only 4% of homeowners have flood insurance.

  4. 90% of all weather-related disasters in the United States involve some type of flooding.
