Use NFIP Campaign Resources to Help Educate Clients on Flood Risk

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) runs several annual outreach campaigns to raise awareness of common flood risks and encourages property owners to obtain flood insurance. Some campaigns, like hurricane awareness and spring flooding, are seasonal, while others are pertinent year-round.

Each campaign provides consumer resources you can share through social media and via email with clients and prospective clients. Formats range from social media posts and fact sheets to brochures, survivor stories and educational videos, infographics, and images. Sharing this information lets you amplify and reinforce campaign impact while you build client relationships.

Urban Flooding campaign materials target towns, cities, and their suburbs where flood risks include new development, changing weather patterns, and sudden storms. Impermeable surfaces increase runoff, and many stormwater systems were not designed for increasingly severe weather. Materials include a video, brochures for renters and homeowners, social media posts, and talking points.

Flood After Fire: While western states are at high risk for wildfires, any area that experiences a significant wildfire is at increased risk of flooding for years after. Fire destroys vegetation and sears the soil, increasing risk for heavy runoff and flash flooding downstream, even when rainfall isn’t severe. Resources include infographics on flood and mudflow risk, social media posts, a video, and talking points.

Flood Insurance for Renters: Many renters assume their property is covered by renters’ insurance or their landlord’s policy, neither of which typically cover flood damage. You can help increase your clients’ awareness and avoid a costly coverage gap with social media posts, an email template, video, and talking points.

Flood Risks Below Dams: Dams exist in every state, providing essential water, power, flood control, recreation, and other community benefits. Unfortunately, many are aging and were not designed for the increasingly severe storms now experienced. Dam failure poses significant flood risk to people and properties downstream. Help clients understand their flood risks through social posts, an email template, and talking points.

Hurricane Season runs from June through November in the Atlantic. Every coastal state along the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico, from Texas to Maine, is affected by hurricanes and tropical storms. Some inland states, such as Arkansas and Tennessee, can also be impacted. You can use resources including survivor videos, emails, social media posts, and talking points to share information with people in your community on how to protect their homes, businesses, and property.

Spring Flooding:  Snowmelt, ice jams, and heavy seasonal rains can all cause spring flooding. This makes late winter a good time to share social media posts on spring flood risk and encourage clients and prospects to purchase flood insurance in advance of seasonal risks.
