Anywhere it can rain it can flood
Insurance agents wear many hats. You wear the most important one when you help your clients protect their homes from unforeseen disasters. The most common and costly of those disasters is flooding. A flood can occur anywhere, and when your clients understand their flood risk, they can take their first step towards flood loss prevention.
Ideally, your clients will protect themselves with flood insurance, but keep in mind that not everyone can afford a flood insurance policy. Thankfully, there is a three-step solution your clients can implement today to help protect their home and mitigate losses in the event of a flood. All they need to do is get S.E.T.
Get S.E.T.
S.E.T. is an easy to remember acronym, three easy steps your clients can take today to prepare their home for a flood. Flooding is costly, and it can happen anywhere. Talk to your clients about mitigating flood loss by getting S.E.T.
Store: Above all else, important documents are the first thing your clients will want protected in a flood. Having easy access to key documents can be crucial in the hours immediately after a flood.
Elevate: One of the most effective ways to protect against hefty bills is to ensure critical utilities are safe. Encourage your clients to elevate utilities above potential floodwaters to ensure as little damage to their home as possible. This includes all utilities that would be costly to repair such as propane tanks, appliances and heating systems.
Toss: The simplest solution is often the best. Before the rain starts to fall, have your clients toss debris out from gutters and downspouts. Flooding occurs when water cannot drain properly. By encouraging your clients to toss debris and clear drainage systems, you help your clients protect their homes.
As an insurance agent, it is your responsibility to ensure that your clients are protected. Let your clients know that most homeowners insurance policies do not cover flood damage and explain the importance of loss prevention tactics such as store, elevate, and toss. You can empower your clients to take proactive steps towards mitigating flood damage.
