Hurricane Season is Coming
Around this time each year, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) releases their predictions about the upcoming hurricane season. NOAA makes their forecast by examining existing weather patterns and climate trends. Their report is a concerted effort to inform the nation, so that people and governments can take decisive action. If you aren’t already looking for those reports, this year is a great time to start. As an insurance agent, it pays to stay in the know when your clients’ homes and lives are on the line.

The Facts
Just looking at some historic data, it’s easy to see why our eyes stay intently on NOAA’s report.

  • Since 1978, the NFIP has paid over $76.3 billion in claims. If it were distributed evenly, that would be almost $1.7 billion every year. Unfortunately, though, the distribution has not been equal.
  • Between 1996 and 2019, 99% of all U.S. counties were impacted by a flooding event.
  • Between 2010 and 2018 the annual cost of flood damage in the United States was approximately $17 billion, which according to FEMA, was four times more than was recorded in the 1980s.

Storms are getting more frequent, and thus it’s as important as ever to help your clients protect their homes against flooding.

Why Should I Engage Clients and Future Clients Now?
Flood insurance has a 30-day wait period before it takes effect. This makes it critically important for you to speak to your clients early, so their coverage can start as soon into hurricane season as possible. In this way, you can help your clients protect the lives they’ve built.

How Can I Help?
Do what you do best. You’re an insurance agent! You have insights, knowledge and a greater understanding of risk. We encourage you to review resources for agents to sell flood insurance to your clients.
