Five Reasons District of Columbia Renters Should Purchase Flood Insurance

DC flood awareness week

Nearly 60% of District of Columbia residents are renters. Chances are, they have renter’s insurance but don’t realize that their policy is leaving them exposed in the event of a flood. Use these five talking points to inform District area clients about their flood risk and why flood insurance the best way to ensure they’re fully covered.

  1. Know your flood risk. The District is at risk of riverine flooding when the Potomac River, as well as tributary streams, overflow their banks. Floods also may occur as the result of costal storms, hurricanes, or heavy rainfall that overwhelms local tributaries and storm drainage infrastructure.

  2. Your current policy could be leaving you exposed. If you are a renter, purchasing a standard renters insurance policy only covers your personal belongings from theft, wind, or fire damage. A standard renters insurance policy typically doesn’t cover flood damage.

  3. Your landlord’s flood insurance doesn’t cover you. While your landlord may have flood insurance to cover their building, their insurance will not cover your personal belongings. Only a separate food insurance policy can cover items damaged in a food.

  4. Flood insurance is the best way to protect the things you love. Renters flood insurance can cover up to $100,000 in damage to your belongings. This includes damage to clothing, furniture, televisions, kitchen appliances, electronics, books and valuables such as artwork and jewelry. Being covered helps you rebuild and get back to normal quicker.

  5. Act now. NFIP policies take 30 days to take effect after purchase. Don’t wait until it’s too late. Purchase flood insurance today to ensure you’re protected throughout hurricane season.
